What is a pterygium?
A pterygium is a growth of conjunctival tissue that advances from the corner of the eye toward the cornea. It is more common in people who spend a lot of time in the sun, wind or dust, which is very common in northern Mexico.
When it causes discomfort, frequent redness, cosmetic concerns or starts to grow over the cornea and distort vision, surgery is the recommended treatment.

Frequently asked questions
Can a pterygium come back?
It can recur, especially when it is removed without a graft. A conjunctival autograft greatly reduces that risk. Protecting your eyes from the sun after surgery also helps.
Is the surgery painful?
It is done under local anesthesia, so there is no pain during the procedure. Some discomfort is common in the following days and is controlled with drops and pain relievers.
When should it be operated?
When it causes discomfort that does not improve with drops, grows toward the center of the cornea, causes astigmatism, or for cosmetic reasons. The best timing is decided during your consultation.
Can it be prevented?
Wearing UV-protective sunglasses and a hat, and lubricating your eyes in dry or dusty environments, helps prevent it from appearing or growing.
