DR. ALAN TREVIÑO
OPHTHALMOLOGIST
RETINA PROCEDURES
Retina specialist in Monterrey
The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Retinal diseases can cause serious vision loss if they are not treated in time.
We perform retina surgery, laser treatment and intravitreal injections in San Pedro Garza García with state-of-the-art technology and no hospital stay.
Warning signs: seek care right away
- Flashes of light, especially in your side vision.
- A sudden shower or increase of floaters.
- A curtain or shadow covering part of your vision.
- Blurry or distorted central vision, or a dark spot.
Retina surgery
Vitrectomy removes the vitreous gel inside the eye to repair the retina. We use it for:
- Retinal detachment: repaired with vitrectomy, scleral buckle or pneumatic retinopexy, depending on the case.
- Macular hole: to release the edges of the hole.
- Epiretinal membrane: with membrane peeling.
- Vitreous hemorrhage and proliferative diabetic retinopathy: with membrane removal and laser.
Retinal laser
Laser photocoagulation seals retinal holes and tears to prevent detachment. It also treats diabetic retinopathy and retinal vascular occlusions.
Intravitreal injections
We use anti-VEGF and steroid medications approved by the FDA and COFEPRIS for:
- Wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
- Diabetic macular edema.
- Diabetic retinopathy.
- Retinal vascular occlusions.
It is a quick procedure with numbing drops and sterile technique. You go home the same day. The number of injections depends on how you respond.
Diagnosis
Dilated retina exam, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and, when needed, fluorescein angiography.

Frequently asked questions
Is a retinal detachment an emergency?
Yes. If you notice flashes, many new floaters or a curtain over your vision, see an ophthalmologist right away. Early treatment improves the visual outcome.
I have diabetes. How often should my retina be checked?
At least once a year, or as often as your ophthalmologist recommends. Diabetic retinopathy may cause no symptoms at first.
Do eye injections hurt?
Numbing drops are applied first. Most patients feel only pressure or brief discomfort.
How many injections will I need?
It depends on the disease and how your retina responds. Injections are scheduled based on your OCT scans.
Does retina surgery require a hospital stay?
No. It is an outpatient procedure and you go home the same day. Some cases require keeping a head position for a few days; we will tell you if that applies to you.
