A complete exam, not just a prescription
A vision test measures how well you see at distance, near and intermediate ranges, and determines whether you need glasses to correct myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism or presbyopia.
When it is done by an ophthalmologist, the health of the whole eye is checked as well. This allows early detection of conditions such as glaucoma, cataract or diabetic retinopathy, which often cause no symptoms at first. Exams are available in English for expats and international patients.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I check my prescription?
In general, every one to two years for adults, and once a year for children or if you have a condition such as diabetes. If you notice changes in your vision, do not wait.
Will my pupils be dilated?
Only when a detailed retina exam is needed. In that case your vision will be blurry and light-sensitive for a few hours, so it is best not to drive afterwards.
Why see an ophthalmologist?
An ophthalmologist is a medical specialist: besides your prescription, they can diagnose and treat eye diseases that cause no symptoms at first.
Can I stop wearing glasses?
Depending on your prescription and eye health, you may be a candidate for refractive surgery. Learn more about refractive surgery.
