What is conjunctivitis?

It is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin, clear membrane that covers the white of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. That is why the eye looks red.

It can be viral, bacterial or allergic. The first two spread easily; the allergic type does not.

Not every red eye is conjunctivitis: uveitis, acute glaucoma or a corneal ulcer also make the eye red and need urgent care. That is why an exam with an ophthalmologist is worthwhile.

The white of the eye looks pink or red.

Discharge

Eyelids stuck together in the morning.

Watery eye

More tearing than usual.

Burning or gritty feeling

As if something were in your eye.

Itching

Swelling around the eye.

Step by step

How we treat conjunctivitis

The right treatment depends on the cause.

01

Slit-lamp exam

We confirm it is conjunctivitis, identify its type and rule out other causes of red eye.

02

Treatment for the cause

Antibiotic drops if bacterial; lubricants and cold compresses if viral; anti-allergy drops if allergic.

03

Avoid spreading it

Wash your hands often, do not share towels or pillows and avoid touching your eyes.

04

Follow-up

If it does not improve in a few days or gets worse, we examine you again.

Do not use steroid drops without a doctor's advice: they can worsen some infections and raise eye pressure.

Types of conjunctivitis

Each type has different symptoms and treatment.

Most common

Viral

Red, watery eye, sometimes with a cold. It is very contagious and usually lasts 1 to 3 weeks.

Contagious

Bacterial

Yellow or greenish discharge and sticky eyelids. It improves with antibiotic drops.

Not contagious

Allergic

Intense itching in both eyes. Triggered by dust, pollen or pets.

At your evaluation we identify the type of conjunctivitis and prescribe the right treatment.

Prevention

Can it be prevented?

Wash your hands often, do not rub your eyes and do not share towels, makeup or eye drops. Change your pillowcase and, if you wear contact lenses, do not sleep in them and follow their cleaning instructions carefully. If you have allergies, avoid dust and known allergens.

Frequently asked questions

Is conjunctivitis contagious?

Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are, through hands, towels or objects. Allergic conjunctivitis is not.

How long does conjunctivitis last?

Bacterial improves in a few days with treatment. Viral usually lasts 1 to 3 weeks. Allergic lasts as long as you are exposed to its trigger.

Can I go to work or school?

If it is viral or bacterial, it is best to wait until discharge and heavy tearing stop so you do not infect others.

Can I use over-the-counter drops?

Lubricants, yes. Avoid steroid or antibiotic drops without medical advice: they can mask or worsen the problem.

Can I wear contact lenses?

Not while you have conjunctivitis. Afterwards, replace your lenses and their case.

When is it an emergency?

If there is severe pain, blurred vision, strong light sensitivity, or if you wear contact lenses and the eye gets worse. It may not be conjunctivitis.
