Frequently asked questions

Can macular degeneration be cured?

There is no definitive cure, but the wet form can be controlled with intravitreal injections, and many patients keep or improve their vision. The dry form is monitored to detect early if it turns into the wet form.

Will macular degeneration make me blind?

Macular degeneration affects central vision but almost never causes total blindness: side (peripheral) vision is preserved. With timely diagnosis and treatment, vision can be largely protected.

How many injections will I need?

It depends on how your retina responds. Treatment usually starts with a series of injections, which are then spaced out according to the OCT results at each visit.

Do vitamins help macular degeneration?

Certain vitamin and antioxidant formulas can help slow progression in some patients with intermediate or advanced dry AMD. They are not for everyone and do not replace treatment of the wet form; your ophthalmologist will tell you if they are right for you.

How much does macular degeneration treatment cost?

It depends on the type of macular degeneration, the medication used and the materials needed. At your visit we review your tests and give you a personalized quote. We also guide you if you have private health insurance.
