What is a macular hole?
A macular hole is a small break in the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for fine vision. It causes blurry or distorted central vision and, without treatment, can leave a permanent spot in the center of your vision.
Most often it forms with age, when the vitreous gel separates from the retina and pulls on the macula. It can also appear after an eye injury or in people with high myopia. It is confirmed with retinal imaging (OCT).
How does a person with a macular hole see?
Drag the line: on the left, normal vision; on the right, how it looks with a macular hole.

Symptoms
Because the other eye compensates, many people notice it only when covering one eye.
Blurry central vision
In one eye.
Bent letters
Straight lines look distorted.
Central spot
In the center of your vision.
Difficulty reading
Or sewing.
How is the surgery done?
Vitrectomy
The vitreous gel inside the eye is removed.
Membrane peeling
A very thin layer is peeled from the retinal surface to release the edges of the hole.
Gas bubble
A gas bubble is placed to help close the hole.
Positioning and recovery
A specific head position is kept for a few days. Vision improves gradually over the following months.

Frequently asked questions
Can a macular hole close on its own?
Rarely, especially at very early stages, it may close without surgery. Most require vitrectomy to close.
How long do I need to stay face down after surgery?
Usually a few days, while the gas bubble helps close the hole. We give you precise instructions for your case.
Will my vision improve?
In most patients the hole closes and vision improves gradually over the following months. The sooner surgery is done, the better the results tend to be.
How much does macular hole surgery cost?
It depends on the surgical technique and the materials used during surgery, such as gas. At your evaluation we review your tests and give you a personalized quote. We also guide you if you have private health insurance.
