What is a retinal detachment?

A retinal detachment happens when the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, separates from its normal position. Without treatment it can cause permanent vision loss.

A retinal detachment is painless, so many people wait. Dr. Alan Treviño, ophthalmologist and retina specialist with subspecialty training in retina and vitreous, diagnoses and treats it. Evaluations are at his office in San Pedro Garza García (Río de la Plata 113, Col. Del Valle), just minutes from Monterrey.

Frequently asked questions

Is a retinal detachment an emergency?

Yes. If you have flashes, many new floaters or a shadow in your vision, you should be examined the same day. If the center of the retina (the macula) is still attached, early surgery gives much better results.

Can a retinal detachment be fixed?

Yes, in the vast majority of cases surgery successfully reattaches the retina. How much vision returns depends mainly on how much time has passed and whether the macula was detached.

How much does retinal detachment surgery cost?

It depends on the type of detachment, the surgical technique and the materials used, such as gas, silicone oil or laser. At your evaluation we review your tests and give you a personalized quote. We also guide you if you have private health insurance.

What care is needed after surgery?

If a gas bubble was placed, you will need to keep a specific head position for a few days and avoid flying or going to high altitudes until the gas is absorbed. We give you precise instructions for your case.
