Frequently asked questions

Can diabetic retinopathy be cured?

Damage that has already occurred cannot be fully reversed, but timely treatment can stop its progression and, in many cases, improve vision, especially when there is macular edema.

How often should a person with diabetes have a retina exam?

At least once a year, even if your vision is good. If you already have retinopathy, are pregnant or your blood sugar is hard to control, exams should be more frequent, as your retina specialist recommends.

Which is better, laser or injections?

It depends on the stage of retinopathy and whether there is macular edema. They are often combined. After your evaluation and tests we explain which treatment is right for you.

How much does diabetic retinopathy treatment cost?

It depends on the stage and the treatment you need (laser, intravitreal injections or surgery) and on the materials used. At your visit we review your tests and give you a personalized quote. We also guide you if you have private health insurance.

Can diabetes make me blind?

Yes, if retinopathy is not detected and treated. The good news is that with regular exams and timely treatment, most cases of blindness from diabetes can be prevented.
