What is an epiretinal membrane?
An epiretinal membrane is a thin layer of tissue, like a cellophane film, that forms over the macula, the central part of the retina. As it contracts, it wrinkles the retina and causes blurry and distorted vision.
It most often appears with age. It can also occur after eye surgery, inflammation (uveitis), diabetes or retinal tears. It is confirmed with retinal imaging (OCT).
How does a person with an epiretinal membrane see?
Drag the line: on the left, normal vision; on the right, how it looks with an epiretinal membrane.

Symptoms
Many membranes are mild and cause no symptoms; they are found during a routine exam.
Blurry vision
In one eye.
Wavy lines
Straight lines look distorted.
Different sizes
Objects look a different size with each eye.
Difficulty reading
Small print.
When and how is it operated?
Monitoring
Mild membranes are only monitored with exams and OCT.
When to operate
Surgery is recommended when vision drops or distortion affects your daily activities.
Vitrectomy with peeling
The membrane is carefully removed so the retina can recover its shape.
Together with cataract
If you also have cataract, both surgeries can be done in the same procedure.
